Philosophy and Teaching Methods

Our classes develop strength, stamina and agility. Through correct training babies can learn to respect and love the water, happily swimming above and under the water.

All babies are born with the natural ability to hold their breath underwater. This is known as the "mammalian diving response". This natural ability forms part of the Aquakiddies/Babies  class structure in order to help your child gain confidence in the water.

From as young as 8 weeks, babies begin with breath holding exercises using word association, thus learning to control their natural instinct to hold their breath when their face makes contact with water.

It is important for a child to enjoy their classes and to feel that the experience is fun. Therefore, Aquakiddies/Babies  courses are taught with the emphasis on playing and training at the same time.

As the parent/guardian is in the water participating with their child, classes are designed to educate not only the child but the parent too. Aquakiddies/Babies  understands the importance of your role and therefore each course will educate you, the parent/carer, in the correct method of teaching baby to swim. Aside from the obvious comfort your child will gain from having you there at class time, you will both be able to enjoy the benefits of Aquakiddies/Babies  when not in the class environment.

Our lessons differ from the classes held at most leisure centres, in the respect that we do not use any flotation aids, such as armbands. Continual use of armbands and other swimming aids can create a false sense of security and confidence in the water and children who have become reliant on these aids, then need to be re-taught without them.
Recent statistics state that nearly 500 babies drown each year, often in very shallow water. The ultimate philosophy and goal of Aquakiddies/Babies  is to teach babies how to be water-safe. This means that an Aquakiddies/Babies  child will learn to find the safety of the poolside unaided.
